IT IS WORLD DRUG DAY TODAY-26th June 2015

It's not too late to turn your life around

The international Day against Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking has been declared under the UN General resolution in 1987. It is celebrated across the world on June 26 every year.

Drug Abuse is harmful to self and society. It continues to pose a serious threat to public health, the safety and well-being of humanity in general and the youth in particular.

We have focussed on educating the youth on the harmful effects of drug addiction. Let us understand addiction. Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance like alcohol, cocaine, nicotine

or engages in such activity where he gets hooked into compulsory engagement in rewarding stimulus, despite adverse consequences like gambling. The term drug has now been given a new meaning. It was used originally to mean medicines.

It is no more just medicine, but also includes psychosomatic substances that include cocaine, heroin, and brown sugar as well as much other mixture of narcotic drugs.

All these drugs have their evil effects on the mind and body cells of the persons who make use of them if it is not being used to correct any medical condition.

Even when the drug is used in patients the healthcare professional is aware of the harmful effects However in clinical practice the doctors use them as in the opinion of the healthcare professional

the use of the medicine outweighs the risks involved in the particular situation he is handling. The problem is when the similar medicine is used by normal individuals when it is termed as

substance abuse or medicine abuse. The users become addicted due to the rewarding stimulus felt while using the substance. The young generation is the worst victim of drug addiction.

Many reasons such as curiosity, spiritual search, desire for pleasure, social excommunication, mental gap, lack of self-reliance etc. are cited as reasons leading to drug addiction.

The problem of drug addiction is all the more serious because the addicts are mostly young school or college going boys and girls who are in fact the future citizens of our country. Therefore it is very

important to ensure that young boys and avoid falling victim to drug addiction. Rehabilitation of the young drug-addicts is a major social problem. We still need many more rehab

centres all across the country to help society in general and the affected people in particular We stress on the need for raising the level of self-consciousness through proper education and

professional counselling at well-staffed rehabilitation centres. NGOs should join hands in making this possible all across the country. We strongly recommend that as part of the rehab programmes the addicts who are able to

overcome their weakness of addiction do spend some time mentoring other addicts. We also stress on the need for forming a healthy environment where the needs of affected youth

can be met. We as part of the NGO force recommend that places where the cultivation of the coca and poppy plants are done be brought under strict surveillance. We wish to clarify that cocoa

plant is quite different from Coca plant. The harmful coca plant naturally grows in many parts of South America. Cocaine is obtained from the notorious Coca plant. The harmful substance cannot

be produced without a proper extraction and distillation facility and certainly an international united force can bring a curb on such facility producing harmful substances

While there is merit in controlling substance abuse there is good treatment possible through different medical procedures. When a patient is made to give up his addiction,

he suffers from several physical side effects of stopping the use of the drug to which he/she is addicted. This is known as withdrawal symptoms. Patients are usually detoxified by a gradual process and soon

he/she regains normalcy. After detoxification is completed the usual recommendation is to allow the patients undergo psychiatric treatment with the help of qualified counsellors.

Finally I would conclude that the help and co-operation of the people in our society is essential for the total rehabilitation of the drug addicts in today’s world. On this International Day against Drug

Abuse and Illicit Trafficking let us take the solemn vow of uniting for a drug-free world. Let us take a pledge that we will continue our determination to end the drug menace in our respective surroundings.
